What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition in which the body is unable to use food properly for energy, resulting in high blood glucose (sugar). Although diabetes is a lifelong condition, people with diabetes can take steps to manage it and prevent serious medical problems.

Four Types of Diabetes:

  • Type 1 diabetes is thought to be caused by an autoimmune reaction (the body attacks itself by mistake) that stops the body from making insulin. Without insulin, the blood contains too much glucose, leading to high blood glucose (sugar) levels. Type 1 is often diagnosed in children, teens, or young adults, but can develop any time.
  • Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes – about 90 percent of people with diabetes have type 2. With type 2 the body doesn’t use insulin well and can’t keep blood sugar at normal levels. Type 2 diabetes can be prevented with a healthy lifestyle.
  • Gestational diabetes develops during pregnancy and usually goes away after the baby is born. However, having gestational diabetes puts the baby at a higher risk for future health problems.
  • Prediabetes affects nearly 88 million adults, and 84 percent of them are unaware. With prediabetes, blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. The Diabetes Prevention Program can help prevent type 2 diabetes.
